In the latest Homing Beacon from StarWars.com, producer Rick McCallum talks about the Episode II international difficulties.``xIn the latest Homing Beacon from StarWars.com, producer Rick McCallum talks about the Episode II international difficulties.

"It's going to be a madhouse for the next six months," ays Producer Rick McCallum. In addition to completing Episode II for North American release, international versions must be completed in time for next spring. As announced last November, Episode II will open in most countries within the same month, a move that considerably squeezes the time required to produce international mixes.
"It means we have to have the finished film done a month ahead of what we did for Episode I," says McCallum. "It means we have to audition and cast 60 to 80 actors to do the parts in each country, and we're in 30 different countries. All the parts have to be translated. It's a very intense, complicated and time-consuming period, but awfully fun if we can pull it off."
``xTheVader``xthevader@garegozers.net``xInternational Difficulties``x1010758551,64213,Prequels``xFull Story: Episode II``xhttp://www.galaxyfaraway.com/Prequels/index.shtml``xIn the latest Homing Beacon from StarWars.com, producer Rick McCallum talks about the Episode II international difficulties.``xhttp://www.galaxyfaraway.com/cgi-bin/Ultraboard/Ultraboard.cgi

The fallen energy company Enron used Star Wars names as fake companies, to hide its debt.``xThe Washington Post reports that the fallen energy company Enron used Star Wars names as fake companies, to hide its debt. Here's an interesting part of it, you can read all about it here.

At the time, late in 1997, it was the smallest of cracks in Enron Corp.'s sprawling foundation -- a difference of a few million dollars in a $383 million investment partnership whimsically named Chewco, after a character in "Star Wars."
This fall, the crack became a fissure that swallowed Enron, forcing the Houston trading company to acknowledge that it had overstated its profits by $400 million in financial reports it had issued since 1997.

Chewco, described by Enron as an outside, independently run partnership, was owned by an Enron executive and his friend with heavy Enron backing, according to a person familiar with the transaction.

Creating the partnership enabled Enron to keep about $600 million of debt off its books. It helped ensure that paper profits from rising shares of Enron stock held by a related partnership called Jedi could still be counted as earnings by Enron. And it was an example of instances where some favored Enron executives made multimillion-dollar profits from such entities.

Enron now acknowledges that the partnerships were used improperly, inflating the company's financial reports that investors -- including thousands of Enron employees -- relied on in deciding to buy or sell its stock. That and other major accounting errors that Enron disclosed in November crippled public confidence in the company, pushing it toward its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing Dec. 2.

The story of Chewco and Jedi and Enron's many other outside partnerships is central to congressional and federal law-enforcement investigations of the company's collapse, according to members of Congress and sources familiar with those inquiries.
``xTheVader``xthevader@garegozers.net``xDummy Companies with Star Wars Names``x1010857358,80190,Miscellaneous``xFull Story: Miscellaneous``xhttp://www.galaxyfaraway.com/Trilogy/index.shtml``xThe fallen energy company Enron used Star Wars names as fake companies, to hide its debt.``xhttp://www.galaxyfaraway.com/cgi-bin/Ultraboard/Ultraboard.cgi

John Williams talks about the Star Wars Score and inserting Imperial March into A New Hope.``xComposer John Williams was interviewed by one of the two Star Wars fan clubs in my country, the Netherlands ;). He talked about remaking the Trilogy films and inserting Imperial March in Episode IV. These are his words:

"I am thrilled to have the chance to go back to something I composed in 1977 and be able to make the entire saga continuous theme-wise." John Williams tells us. "Notably abscent in the first movie is the Imperial March. Being able to insert that theme in the first movie will create a much stronger emotional flow throughout the Saga. After the release of Episode III George will enhance the original trilogy with additional scenes and special effects, adding my adjustments to the score this will seamlesly branch the entire Star Wars Saga into one massive romantic space opera. Just got back from the midnight show of Attack of the Clones. Read my non-spoiler review!
UPDATE: Additional thoughts on second viewing!``xFor those of you just planning on skimming through my review, let me make it easy for you.

Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones is the most deep and rich Star Wars film of them all.

When I say deep and rich, I mean from the standpoint of storyline, characters and locations. The film has definite flaws; more so than the original trilogy; but it also has a storyline that is vast beyond anything any other Star Wars film has demonstrated in the past.

Yoda is the star of the film, and thankfully has been given more than just his wise and preachy Episode I role- there is humor, wisdom and power in his character this time around. Without going into details of the plot, I will say that after this film you will never look at Yoda the same way again.

Jar Jar has a much smaller role this time around, though frankly I did not find him offensive the first time around. I actually kind of liked him. This time, much of the humor is left to Obi Wan and comic relief to C3PO. Both are handled well; especially a part where you get to see 3PO's "dark side".

The visuals are stunning- if you thought Episode I couldn't be beat, Lucas and friends have outdone themselves again. The new planets and characters are very fresh; reminds me a lot of Return of the Jedi. The film also takes you back to a few familiar places and things that remind you that this is Star Wars (a certain colored milk, anyone?).

Having said all that, the film does have its flaws. The first half has the story moving swiftly, but each scene feeling laborious. The dialogue is delivered, as in Episode I, with a certain bearing that is more common on the stage than in film. I do not think it is as much a problem of quality of dialogue or acting as it is of editing- the scenes move along a bit too quickly, telling you the story but not allowing it to sink in. As a sum, these swiftly moving scenes feel laborious.

But all of this is done away with as soon as the intrigue of the political and military maneouvres sets in. This film is unique in the Star Wars saga to have a definite sense of suspense about the heroes' choices and the villains motives.

Finally, the greatest complement I can bestow upon Attack of the Clones is that the last scene makes you want your Episode III now!

Enjoy!
DevanJedi

Additional thoughts on second viewing:
- Most of the scenes that felt wooden the first time around felt a lot better on second viewing. I think the reason for that is that they seemed very un-starwars-like the first time around. Also, I had said in my review that the scenes move very quickly, not allowing the message to sink in; this is not a problem in the second viewing since the message has already sunk in. This is still a flaw with the film, but one that disappears for the repeat-viewing fan.
(SPOILERS highlight to read)
- Yoda's fight felt even more spectacular the second time around!
- Christopher Lee as Count Dooku is the best acting performance in the film!
- Since the scenes are short, all emotions that are carrying Anakin to the dark side have to be conveyed perfectly in every inflection of his voice and facial expression- he carries it off very well.
- I am surprised that Padme is not scared of Anakin!

Signing off!
DevanJedi``xDevanJedi``xskywalker@galaxyfaraway.com``xAttack of the Clones Review``x1021545240,46066,Prequels``xFull Review: Episode II``xhttp://www.galaxyfaraway.com/Prequels/index.shtml``xJust got back from the midnight show of Attack of the Clones. Read this interesting report about the reality of Star Wars Science. You can find the complete story at msnbc.com.

EVEN AMONG science-fiction stories, the “Star Wars” movies are something of a breed apart. Instead of attempting to foretell our future in space, the tale is set “long ago, in a galaxy far away.” And the scientific marvels of that long-ago age, such as faster-than-light travel and synthetic space gravity, are employed primarily to facilitate a ripping good yarn.

For example, director George Lucas patterned the space chases and races after dogfights in World War II epics, motorcycle chases and chariot races. As a result, spaceship engines scream — even though there is no medium to transmit sound in the vacuum of space. The winged fighters bank and pirouette in space just as they would in Earth’s atmosphere. Weightless hovercraft swoop a couple of feet off the ground as if they were wheeled vehicles. And passengers aboard starships don’t have to trouble themselves over the effects of zero-gravity. “

But strangely enough, there are some things that seem, well, less unbelievable now than they did in 1977 when the first “Star Wars” movie came out, says Jeanne Cavelos, an astronomer and author who wrote “The Science of ‘Star Wars.’”
``xTheVader``xthevader@garegozers.net``xStar Wars Science``x1021801803,85730,Miscellaneous``xFull Story: Miscellaneous``xhttp://www.galaxyfaraway.com/Trilogy/index.shtml``xIs there a real chance that in the future we will swing lightsabers and fly X-Wings? You can read the complete article here.

In the first of the prequels, The Phantom Menace, the Force is opened up to even more interpretation. Two more aspects of the one energy are developed, one being the Unifying Force, and the other being the Living. According to creator George Lucas, the former has to do with destiny and purpose, while the latter involves intuition, spontaneity, and empathy with all living creatures. Though the Jedi Council emphasizes the Unifying Force, others such as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn champion the Living, and this article deals with why this is so.

To begin with, the Living Force is first and foremost about being in the present moment. This sounds like a simple thing, yet it is anything but. Just as Yoda criticizes Luke Skywalker for, we too spend most of our lives everywhere by where we actually are, anxiously peeking over time's shoulders, trying to get a glimpse of the future. Of course, just as a horizon will recede when one attempts to chase it down, so will the future get farther and farther away, which is no doubt why even the Jedi cannot accurately predict it.
``xTheVader``xthevader@garegozers.net``xMy Ally is the Force...``x1022247414,38079,Miscellaneous``xMiscellaneous Report``xhttp://www.galaxyfaraway.com/Trilogy/index.shtml``xSuite101 has published an article about the sense and the nonsense of the Force. "Myth is something that never happened, but is happening all the time."
This was once said by the Greec poet Sallistius, and reused by a recent article at Suite101 about the mythology in AOTC.``x"Myth is something that never happened, but is happening all the time."
This was once said by the Greec poet Sallistius, and reused by a recent article at Suite101 about the mythology in AOTC. If the part below tastes for more, read all of it here.

There is an arresting shot in Attack of the Clones, the latest of the Star Wars prequels, in which Anakin Skywalker both literally and visually begins his descent into the abyss of the dark side. Going in search of his mother who has been captured by Tusken Raiders on Tatooine, Anakin is shown on the side of a cliff overlooking their encampment. The shot pulls back and reveals him crouching against the backdrop of the night sky, which is filled with stars. When he goes to rescue his mother - an action that will eventually lead him into committing a revenge massacre - he dives down to the desert below, his black cloak billowing in the wind. The symbolism should be obvious to those raised in the Occidental tradition. Anakin is literally falling out of heaven. Curiously, no critic has brought this up in their review. While the reviews have been more positive than they were for The Phantom Menace three years ago, the critics have yet to really come to terms with the Star Wars saga. They frequently use the word "myth" to describe it, but they pass it among themselves like something of a hot potato, never pausing to hold it for more than a second - much less to analyze it. Yet as George Lucas has always insisted, his space opera is a modern myth, and therefore it is interesting to actually review it as such.

The Greek poet Sallistius wrote that "Myth is something that never happened, but is happening all the time." This is the way it will be discussed here. The word myth comes from "mythos," which means "stories." So first and foremost, a myth is a story, but one of a particular kind. Once it was assumed that myth was simply primitive man's way of interpreting the phenomenal world. It was about answering certain questions, and giving meaning to a meaningless universe. Yet the renowned scholar Joseph Campbell - who had a tremendous influence on Star Wars - argued that myth was rather a metaphorical language. It was aimed not so much at describing historical events or giving meaning to the universe, but was a metaphor for the experience of life. All the fabulous tales of gods and goddesses, men and mortals, were really representing internal psychological states and conflicts.

[...]

Attack of the Clones offers up mysterious new worlds like Kamino, an entire planet of rolling seas and inhabited by strange creatures with long necks and pale white bodies, and also Geonosis, which is home to insect-like aliens who live in great hives. There is also a new side of the galactic capitol of Coruscant which is introduced, including a diner and a night club. Likewise, there is a trip back to Naboo, the beautiful green world of Senator Amidala, and also to Tatooine, a desert planet that almost seems like home to those of us familiar with the saga. The galaxy opens up with every film that is produced, yet the greatest triumph of Lucas and company is that things can seem both alien and familiar at the same time. This is ultimately the essence of myth.
``xTheVader``xthevader@garegozers.net``xAttack of the Clones Mythology``x1022957700,4921,Prequels``xFull Story: Episode II``xhttp://www.galaxyfaraway.com/Prequels/index.shtml``x"Myth is something that never happened, but is happening all the time."
This was once said by the Greec poet Sallistius, and reused by a recent article at Suite101 about the mythology in AOTC.``xhttp://www.galaxyfaraway.com/cgi-bin/Ultraboard/Ultraboard.cgi

There are a few novelties that allow you to develop a better defense mechanism for your home base. Shield generators and power cores are now upgradeable, making it harder for enemy forces to infiltrate your command post.

This game gives you a chance to try 13 Clone Campaign missions, along with a special bonus scenario at the very end of the game (which, I intend to leave as a surprise, so you won't hear anything about it in this review). New worlds are uncovered such as the fiery planet Sarapin and the rocky surroundings of Geonosis. Some cool features were included on Sarapin, such as units falling into boiling lava if you're not careful. Another nice addition is that you get to enjoy battles in space and not just on land. Other than that, there's nothing out of the ordinary in this expansion pack.

[...]

It is obvious that Star Wars Battlegrounds: Clone Campaigns has a unique spark thanks to the inventive mission concepts and plot. Through it all, I'm still a Star Wars wacko and there's always that extreme feeling I cannot resist when those blasters start firing. Overall, it seems to me that players who have had fun with the original game will surely appreciate the great number of additional units (200) and the fact that they can replay the old campaigns with new available upgrades. The massively multiplayer online role-playing game takes place in the Star Wars universe between the happenings in the Episodes 4 and 5 of the film saga (Star Wars: A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.) As with Sony Onlines Everquest, Galaxies will be a persistent world where, in this case, your character can interact with other budding bounty hunters or Jedi hopefuls. With all of the depth and trappings of the Lucas legend at their disposal, the developers could easily have thrust a rush job online and the faithful would have come. But based on the demonstration witnessed, it appears that the project is getting plenty of TLC -- evident from the fine tuning allowed in the character customization options to the realism of settings such as Jabbas Palace. "In all the critical reviews of Episode II, I have never heard any criticism of the clones," says Jeff Light, motion capture supervisor at ILM. "That was also true of the droids in Episode I. No one mentions them." He's right. Some reviewers note that the clones are based on Jango Fett (Temuera Morrison), and that's about it. They often comment on such CG characters as Yoda, Jar Jar, or the Kaminoans, but when it comes to the clones, the reviewers are silent.

[...]

In one scene, for example, a clone trooper runs after Padm (Natalie Portman) who has tumbled out of a vehicle and rolled down a hill during the clone war. He kneels down to ask if she's OK; the interaction continues as she gets up. There's no clue that the trooper helping her is digital. "We worked and worked to come up with every footstep, every reaction," says Light. "We did more takes of that performance than any [motion-captured] scene in the film."

Light's crew started with rough blocking from an animatic created in Maya that showed what the clone was supposed to do; measurements from a camera match-move showed where Portman was on the bluescreen stage. Using those measurements, the crew put a volleyball on the mocap stage to represent Portman's head when she was lying down, and used a tripod with a marker so the performer would look in the correct direction when she stood up.

``xTheVader``xthevader@garegozers.net``xComputer Graphics World features Episode II``x1026589259,22417,Prequels``xFull Story: Episode II``xhttp://www.galaxyfaraway.com/Prequels/index.shtml``xRemember our post about the CG used in Attack of the Clones?
