Set in the early 21st century, this novel seeks to address the political, scientific, and social changes that would result from the invention of such a device. Dubbed "The Trigger", this machines introduction to the world sets off a free-for-all among idealistic scientists, self-serving politicians, fanatical lobbyists, and old-style military types. Part sci-fi, part thriller, part social treatise, the book examines the surety that what has been invented cannot be un-invented, and that scientific breakthroughs are inevitable, unpredictable, and only as good or evil as the people who control their use.
